While researching at the Burton collection today, I found my great aunt Sophia Warunek, much to my surprise. She married Joseph Ploch on July 29, 1912. So far, I found two daughters, Veronica and Maria. Would really like to make contact with the Ploch family to compare notes, if possible. Also researching Boron, Wojsowicz and a few others from St. Hedwig. Thanks for the great website.

My paternal grandparents were wed at St. Hedwig in the early 1900's and all the children went to that school, my Father, Joseph M. Moskal was an altar boy. I was christened at St. Hedwig in 1956. Even though we moved up the street some and attended St. Lawrence, St. Hedwig will always be my "Family Church." In loving memory of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Moskal.-Patricia Kunkel (Moskal)

I am in awe of the beauty of St. Hedwig Church. I grew up in Detroit and Dearborn and attended mass at all of the Catholic Churches in the area at one time or another. After moving to Canton, I must say I took the beauty and craftmanship of these churches for granted. I would be delighted to be able to belong to a parish like St. Hedwig again. It just makes one think why in the world a community would not wouldn't strive to be build a Catholic Church like St. Hedwig.

Searching for these family members who resided on Hammond and also Otis streets: Michael Czajka and wife Anna (he died young and she remarried to Martin Misiolek. He also died but two daughters married a Zdanek and a Zdanowski). Son's from Michael were Frank and John. John died in 1985 all are buried in Holy Cross. Also had a daughter Eleanore Czajka who died early and Eleanore Misiolek who married Joseph Zdanowski. Catherine Misiolek, Martin and Anna's daughter, died in 2003 and never married. Frank Czajka b. 1868 Poland (brother of Michael, Jacob, and Andrew). Married Mary and had son named either Frank/Fred in 1900. Cannot locate his grave. Jacob Czajka b. 1860 Poland. Married Kunegunda Kawa Kwilos. Had children Laurence (whom I believe to actually be a Kwilos rather than a Czajka - his son's were Walter, Joseph, and Jacob (Joe and Jake changed their name to Cyers)), Annie b. 1887 in MI, Mary b. 1891 and married Wojciech (George) Kapanowski, and Michael b. 1894 and was drowned in a brickyard in 1906. All buried in Holy Cross. Andrew Czajka b. 1864 in Poland. Married Mary Slowinski and had nine sons and four daughters. All changed their last name to Cyers. http://www.geocities.com/jomilu2001

My dad is Joe Szombati (attended St. Hediwg his senior year) and my mom is Kathryn Zonca (youngest daughter of Genevieve and John). I discovered St. Hedwig's site one night and found it very interesting to learn a bit of history about the church that was such a large part of my heritage and that I have visited a few times. It is a gorgeous church that I am happy to see is being preserved.

Hope we have one at least for our 20th and if not I hope everyone is happy, healthy and are doing well. It was quite an experience going to a Catholic high school. First congratulations on your 1oo year anniverary. My grandarents were married in St, Hedwig's in 1916. I was thrilled to find so much information, not only about the Church, but also about the community in which they lived. It was very interesting to learn that the church was closed for a time during the great influenza epidemic. My grandmother had two young children at that time. They were vorn a year apart, and ided a year apart, though not from inluenza. I can imagine the fear a young Polish immigrant, newly wed, and a new mother must have felt during those times. This is a beautiful web site, with a lot of valuable information. Thank you!

Congratulations and best wishes to the parishioners of St. Hedwig's Church during their centennial year! May God richly bless each of you a hundredfold. I was your church organist from the First Sunday of Lent, 1970 (under Fr. Kaleciak) until well over a year later, after being instrumental in getting the beautiful organ to work and later, having a friend from the Senate Theatre Organ Club repair it as best he could with the limited funds made available to him. What a great treasure this venerable organ is, and I pray that someday it will be restored to its fullness! I wonder, at times, how many parishioners might still recall me from 1970? - and certainly many would be surprised to know their former organist is now head of the North American Province of the Mariavite Old Catholic Church. God bless and be with each of you!

My mother who is still living attends the festival at St.Hedwig's and I have an aunt who is still active in St.Hedwig activities. For the above reasons I feel St.Hedwig's is in some way a part of my life.

I was looking for info on St. Hedwigs located in Thorp, Wisconsin. I found the similarities so striking. The parish in Wisconsin is made up mostly of people of Polish origin. The community is small, population 1700. There were two catholic church's in town St. Hedwigs and St. Bernards. Both had parochial schools and both churches were quite impressive structures. The two never got along until the old parish priests passed on. It has now consolidated into one parish,St. Hedwigs church and St. Bernards school has been shut down. It was so sad to see such a beautiful church go by the way side. However, the community could not afford two and the pratical solution was to close the duplication of the two. Good luck to all of you and God bless.

I happened to see the fyler posted in the back of the church when my family attended Good Friday Services 04-18-03. At the time my mother was looking for a bulletin and the usher told her that there weren't anymore, it being Friday and the new ones would come out on Saturday. The flyer said that we could access the past week's bulletin via the webpage. We are not members of Saint Hedwig's but we starting coming to the annual Rice Bowl soup day that you have every Lent. This year we decided to attend your Good Friday Services. The church is so beautiful and I commend everyone for keeping the parish and Polish heritage alive. Congratulations on your 100th anniversary.

I am searching for the ancestry of my husband's Czajka family who resided at 4027 Cicotte in Detroit. Andrew Czajka's wife, Mary Slowienski had a brother who owned a barber shop on Michigan Avenue near the theater (across from Cicotte St.). I don't know his name but he supposedly had a son named Robert and went by the possible name of Slowien/Slowen. Andrew's daughter, Victoria married John Mycek and his other daughter, Emily, married into the Czapiewski/Chappie family. Also doing research on the Kubek, Kobok, Drobot families in Detroit.

Love the site! ! Went to school at good ol Hedwigs from K-12, graduated in 1976. Was a member of Troop 591 and made Eagle Scout in 1973 along with 6 other great guys with the help & guidance of our beloved Scoutmaster, Mr. Stanley Zonca. Even worked for the parish in high school both during the summer and after school. Hopefully I'll be around for the 100th jubilee celebrations and will see a lot of familiar faces. God Bless! !

My grand parents lived in Detroit on Hammond Street in 1906 - 1908 and must have belonged to St. Hedwigs because my fathers birth records were gotten from the parrish. I visited the church with my great aunt and uncle, John and Cecelia Misiolek when we visited from Tacoma in 1948! Our Misiolek and Rzonca relatives were St. Hedwigs people and the cousins were schooled there.
